GARBAGE DISPOSERS

Metro-Flow Plumbing in Dallas receives numerous service calls about improperly working Dallas garbage disposers. It can be quite frustrating to have a kitchen sink that won't drain. Unfortunately, garbage disposers in Dallas are often used incorrectly which results with a clog. A common belief is that anything and everything can be eliminated in a disposer. Because it is called a garbage disposer, many homeowners assume that it can be used to get rid of all garbage.

When large quantities of food and debris are placed in a disposer, they can overwhelm the appliance and cause a clog to form in the kitchen sink drain. Garbage disposers are designed to handle only light food and residue that is rinsed off from dishes and cookware before they are place into a dishwasher. Large quantities of food and debris overwork the appliance and cause a clog to form in the kitchen sink drain.

The day after Thanksgiving, commonly known as “Black Friday”, is the busiest day of the year for Metro-Flow Plumbing in Dallas. Many garbage disposers become clogged throughout this day due to all the cooking that is going on in many Dallas residences. This increase of activity in the kitchen produces so much more food scraps in this one day, which can quickly develop into a big problem.

TROUBLESHOOTING A COMMON PROBLEM:

PROBLEM: YOUR GARBAGE DISPOSAL DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY, BUT SOUNDS LIKE IT SHOULD.

Solution: Be absolutely sure that the first thing you do is to make sure your disposer is switched to the OFF position. Shine a flashlight into the drain to verify that no foreign objects are in the garbage disposer. If you have discovered a foreign object, then proceed to remove the item using pliers or a similar grasping tool after you have again verified that your disposer is OFF. NEVER under any circumstance put your hand inside a garbage disposer! This is extremely careless and dangerous and can lead to a devastating accident. If you could not locate a foreign object, then press the reset button located on the bottom of the disposer under the sink. Test the disposer by turning it on. Your disposer should have come with a hex key jam-clearing tool. It is usually kept underneath the sink, sometimes taped to the disposer unit. Look for its keyhole at the bottom of your garbage disposer and insert the tool. Turn it back and forth to clear the jam.
